A Guide to Ceramic Rings

A new trend which is gaining popularity is the use of ceramic rings in weddings and as gifts. Ceramic rings offer a range of benefits which sets them apart from the more conventional metal rings like gold and silver. Some of the benefits will include the affordable cost, strength and functionality of these rings.

Ceramic materials

When most people think about ceramic materials they imagine clay and pottery. Ceramic jewellery can be created with these materials but there are other materials which are also classed as ceramics. High-tech ceramic such as titanium carbide and tungsten carbide are often used for rings and other jewellery. Carbide ceramics have high melting points which makes them very string and durable. In fact many of these ceramics are used in the creation of bullet proof vests and the coating of tools.

Safety and comfort

When looking at any ring it is important that safety and comfort are taken into account. Safety often relates to any allergic reactions one might have when wearing the ring. Certain metals like gold cause reactions which are painful or uncomfortable. With ceramic rings you do not have to worry about this because they are hypoallergenic. This is due to the fact that ceramic materials do not include metals known to cause reactions such as copper and cobalt. Many people find that ceramic rings are more comfortable to wear as they come with an optional comfort fit. The rings with this comfort fit will have a rounded inner surface which hugs the finger differently to metal rings.

Durability of ceramic rings

Durability is an important aspect of rings which needs to be looked at. Metals like platinum and stainless steel are quite durable but carbide ceramics are more durable than these metals. When rating the hardness of compounds on the Mohs Scale of Hardness with 10 being the hardest compound carbide ceramics are rated at 9. The strength of these ceramics makes them highly scratch resistant. Other damage that these rings are resistant of include staining and dents.

Ceramic ring styles

Ceramic rings come in a range of different styles and colours. In terms of colour choices the most common choice for men’s rings is black. To increase the design of the ring many jewellers offer laser imprinting or the banding of metals into the carbide ceramics. The edging of the ring can also be changed from a basic circular ring to domed edges or bevelled edges.

Maintenance of ceramic rings

While ceramic rings are durable and resistant to most types of damage they do need a certain level of maintenance. To clean the ring it is recommended that you use a damp cloth to wipe the material and then a different lint-free cloth to dry the ring. If you have a white ring then you should clean the ring with water and a mild detergent. You need to ensure that your ring is completely dry before putting it back on or storing it.
