The Pros and Cons of Steel Rings

Steel rings are often made out of stainless steel and are an attractive option for many people. Of course you need to consider both the pros and the cons of these rings before you purchase one. By comparing these you are able to fully understand whether or not these rings are right for you.

The pros

For many people the biggest advantage to stainless steel rings is the cost. Unlike other metals these rings do not carry a hefty price tag. This does not mean that these rings look cheap. While the price is less the rings carry the same shine and look as many more expensive metals with stainless steel often being compared to platinum in look.

Maintenance is an aspect of jewellery that no-one enjoys. Another pro for stainless steel rings is that they are easy to maintain and cleaning can be done with household items. If your ring has dirt and grime on it you need to use some warm water, a cloth and mild detergent. If these items do not clean your ring sufficiently using white toothpaste without silica should do the job. After cleaning your ring ensure that all the water is gone to avoid water spots.

People looking to help the environment should know that steel rings are more eco-friendly than others. The reason for this is that less energy is required to produce these rings and the production process creates less waste. These rings are also hypoallergenic as they are not mixed with compounds which often cause skin reactions.

The cons

When purchasing a stainless steel ring it is important to note that stainless does not actually mean stain free. While this metal id very hard to stain and it will not rust like regular steel there is the possibility that it will stain at some point. To completely avoid the metal from staining you will need to clean the ring regularly to remove skin oils and other dirt.

The use of stainless steel for rings is relatively new and the market is not as big as other metals. This means that you will not have the same range of different styles and designs with these rings. While these rings can be engraved and gemstones can be set in them the main problem is that not all jewellery stores stock them.

At some point you may need to have the ring resized and this is a problem with steel rings. As steel is a hard metal it is difficult to work with once it has been cast. In many cases it is impossible to have the ring resized and you will need to exchange the ring for the correct size.

One of the biggest cons for stainless steel rings is that they are not a precious metal. This metal does have the same shine and look as many of these metals like sterling silver and platinum but not the same value. Many people find that when gifting these rings they do not convey the same message as precious metals.
