How To Find Your Ring Size Using String
Not sure of your ring size but need to place an order quickly? No worries—we’ve got you covered. Using a simple piece of string, you can measure your finger at home and get an approximate ring size. While this method isn’t as accurate as using our free ring sizer, it’s a great backup for those “I-need-this-ring-now” moments.
What You’ll Need:
- A piece of non-stretchy string or dental floss
- A ruler with millimetres
- A pen or marker
Step-By-Step Instructions:
- Wrap the String Around Your Finger: Take your string and wrap it around the base of the finger you’ll be wearing your ring on. Make sure it’s snug but not too tight—you want it to mimic how a ring would sit.
- Mark the Overlap Point: Use your pen or marker to mark the point where the string overlaps and completes the circle around your finger.
- Measure the String: Lay the string flat against your ruler and measure the length in millimetres from the starting point to your mark. This is the circumference of your finger.
- Find Your Ring Size: Use the chart below or our ring size calculator to convert your measurement into your ring size. If you’re between sizes, always go for the larger size—you can adjust for a slightly looser fit, but a ring that’s too tight is a no-go.
Tips for the Best Results:
- Measure at the Right Time: Your fingers can change size depending on the time of day and temperature. Measure your finger in the evening, when it’s at its largest, for the most accurate result.
- Repeat for Accuracy: Measure your finger 2–3 times to ensure you’re getting a consistent measurement.
- Consider the Ring Width: Wider bands fit snugger, so if you’re ordering a wider ring, you may want to size up slightly.
