How Do I Work Out My Ring Size?

Men’s ring sizing can seem confusing and complicated, especially if you’ve visited two different jewellers and they’ve given you two different sizes for the same ring finger.

How does this happen? Well, in Australia, we traditionally use a lettering system, like Q, or Q 1/2. This lettering system in our opinion is a little bit flawed, as the difference between half sizes is so small, that your finger can swell by more than this simply walking from outside of the shopping center into the air conditioning!

While we are an Australian founded and owned company, we think the U.S. men’s ring sizing system is superior, simply because the difference between 8 and 8.5 is more useful and accurate to our customers’ every day life and requirements.

We also take that up a notch again by producing our own super accurate ring sizer, which we give away to our Australian customers for free. This takes all the guesswork out of it with no risk to you. Get yours now!

If you’re not in Australia however, read on, as we have other suggestions for you as well.

How Do I Use The Ring Sizer?

  1. Wrap the ring sizer around the ring finger;
  2. Insert the pointed end through the loop;
  3. Tighten the sizer on the finger until comfortable;
  4. Take the sizer on and off as if you were doing so with a ring;
  5. Loosen or tighten as necessary;
  6. Once you have the right fit, check the number the arrow is pointing at (if it is between numbers, then this is a half size);
  7. Done!

Customer tips

  • Wide bands often fit slightly tighter and customers often go up half a size.
  • Our bands are comfort fit, so they taper to the finger and you may require half a size smaller if you are used to a flat inner band.
  • Fingers swell through out the day so try your ring on first thing in the morning and after lunch or a day at work before you decide to exchange your size.
  • What fits you perfectly in Winter may no longer in Summer. You can use our Fit for Life policy to grab a new size!

Common Questions

I went to three different jewellers and was given three different sizes, which one is correct?

You’re not alone! While sizing should be the same between different jewellers, slightly differing measuring techniques and tools can result in different results. This is why we recommend using a sizing ribbon from the actual jeweller you will be purchasing from. We also include one of our ring sizers when you purchase a full priced ring from us, so if it isn’t the perfect fit you can accurately measure your replacement and use our easy exchange system for out modern metals rings  and for traditional metals, it is as easy as heading to your local jeweller to have it re-sized.

But what if I order the wrong size, or it is for a gift?

If you find that the ring you have ordered is the incorrect size, you may exchange it in accordance with our super easy exchange/returns policies, just make sure you check out the policy for the metal that you want.

Average ring size for men?

The average male ring size we sell is a size 10 (T 1/2) so we recommend purchasing a ring around this size. Check out our exchange and returns policies first, this may help you decide what metal to buy.

The tungsten ring I want is not available in the size I need!

Please contact us, as we can look into having it custom made for you (it may incur a charge to have a ring custom made for you). Custom made rings are only available if it is a design we stock and will stock in the future, so sale rings are generally not available. Custom men’s rings can require 2-6 months to be made and arrive back to us, so please get in early and let us know your time frame.

Men’s Wedding Ring Finger

In Australia (and most of the world), a man’s wedding ring finger is the finger on your left hand next to your pinky. This is often unhelpfully referred to as your ring finger.

How to use string to quickly work out your ring size

While not as accurate as using our ring sizer, a quick way of measuring your ring size immediately is to use the string method. Click the button below to learn how and also use our free string method sizing calculator.

Ring Measuring Tool (if you have a ring but don't know it's size)

We created the following tool for those who already have a ring that fits well, but aren’t sure of or can’t remember the size. Please note: this works best on desktop or laptop computers.

Find Your Ring Size
1. Calibrate your screen by adjusting the slider below to match the width of a standard credit card.
2. Hold your ring against the circles below to find your size.

What if you get it wrong?

Whether you use our sizer, get measured at a jeweller, or use any other method, when you finally get your ring, you may find it still feels a little too big, or a little too tight. This can happen for a number of reasons.

Temperature

The temperature when you measured your finger, versus when you first put on your ring may be quite different. As previously mentioned, your finger swells and contracts depending on how hot or cold it is. If you followed our guide you would have measured your finger throughout a normal day to get your average size, but depending on where you work and live you might find that you actually did get the best ring size for your situation. So don’t panic yet, take your ring on and off throughout your day and see how it feels as a whole.

Don’t wear it throughout the day however, as depending on the material you’ve chosen, you may damage the ring and this might restrict your exchange options.

Ring Style

Thin rings, thick rings, narrow rings, wide rings, comfort fit, no comfort fit…Rings come in a variety of styles, and can fit slightly differently regardless of them being technically the same size. At the end of the day, a comfortable ring is one you wear, and an uncomfortable ring is one that sites on your dresser gathering dust. So what do you do if your ring isn’t comfortable?

Exchange or Resize

This is where the policies of the jeweller you purchased the ring from really matter. It’s extremely importnt that you purchase your ring from a company like Mens Rings Online that allows you to exchange your ring for a different size or style should you need to.

This usually only applies to non-custom made rings though, so if you are going full custom, you should examine the policies of where you are buying from. This is less important for precious metal rings, as they can be resized, but fully custom titanium or tungsten rings cannot be resized or exchanged, so it’s important that you get the size right, or going for an in-stock option instead.

Material

Different metals or materials can also fit differently. This is because modern metals like titanium rings and tungsten rings are typically slightly thicker in their design, whereas gold rings, platinum rings and silver rings are usually slightly thinner.

Finally...

To summarise all of the above, while there are many ways to get an idea of your ring size, here is the best way in our opinion:

  1. Get a ring sizer (get our free ring sizer here);
  2. Size yourself at different times of the day in different temperatures and take the average;
  3. If buying a titanium or tungsten ring, only buy from a company that allows exchanges;
  4. Once your ring arrives, try it on at different times of the day to make sure it is comfortable.
  5. Done!
