The little finger of the non-dominant hand. That is the traditional placement: the signet ring is conventionally worn on the left pinky. The logic is practical as much as heraldic. A signet was a working seal pressed into wax, so it needed to face outward and stay clear of the hand you write with.

Identity rather than status. A pinky ring says family, heritage, a club, a trade, a milestone or simply a taste for jewellery. It is the one finger with no romantic meaning attached, which is exactly why it gets used for everything else.

It is also the easiest finger for a man who is not sure about wearing rings. The little finger sits apart from the others, so a ring there does not click against a keyboard or a steering wheel the way a middle-finger ring does.

What does a thumb ring mean, and how do you size one?

Confidence, and not much else. There is no marital or family meaning attached to a thumb ring. Historically the thumb ring was equipment, not jewellery: an archer’s ring worn to protect the thumb from the bowstring during a thumb draw. Modern thumb rings are pure style.

The thing nobody tells you is the sizing. A thumb runs roughly two to three sizes larger than the same hand’s ring finger, and the joint is broader relative to the base, so a thumb ring that clears the knuckle can feel loose at rest. Yes, and the only real rule is balance. Three principles hold up: keep one hand busier than the other rather than mirroring both; leave a gap between rings so adjacent fingers are not both loaded; and let one ring be the loud one while the rest stay plain.

Metal mixing is fine; matching every ring to one finish looks more studied than it looks good. What does clash is scale — a chunky 10 mm band beside a thin 4 mm one on neighbouring fingers reads as an accident. The left-hand rule is regional, not universal. Do not buy for one finger using a measurement from another. Three things move the number: measure the finger the ring will live on, measure at the end of the day when your hands are at their largest, and add roughly half a size for a band 8 mm or wider, because a wide ring covers more of the finger and fits tighter than a narrow one at the same size.
